I’m not sure about you, but for me committing to holes in my walls is a HUGE thing! I’ll scan the eternity of Pinterest options for ‘possibilities’ , ‘ideas’, or the inevitable ‘DIY’, and I’ll come so close to the ‘C’ word..then panic sets in and I’ll second guess myself for probably another 3 months or more, and then come up with a completely different idea (insert my husbands eye roll)! It’s a real problem guys… a first world problem for sure but nonetheless a real issue I have lol!
So when one day I was taking a break from real life responsibilities, and probably work.. I was scrolling through instagram when Shea Mcgee of Mcgee & Co posted this picture of a long hallway that had these large black frames with massive white mats, hung in unison on the wall. My heart actually stopped, and my eyes expelled all the ‘heart eyes’ and I just KNEW this was what I was going to do for our medium size-ish breezeway on our second story. I mean..I love black, and I love white, and I’m all about less is more! Now keep in mind this was well over a YEAR ago! You guuuuys I’m that bad at executing and committing when it comes to my walls!
Maybe you are also like me..one who thinks she can DIY effortlessly, and have it always be so easy peasy and of course beautiful, when in reality it takes so much damn time, you usually injure yourself in some way, loose your patience towards your significant other, or have stashed away in the corner of your storage room a collection of TERRIBLE canvases that are a reminder that once you thought you could ‘do your own art’..I mean why pay when it looks so easy right? Ya, well my husband won’t let me throw them out because he wants them to be a reminder to me that I in no way, can paint, or even execute a decent piece of art LOL! So mean that mr. is! Honestly out of all my attempts in painting..I have ONE little canvas that turned out decent that I actually have hung in my office..and it’s black and white (are we surprised..no? ya me either). Okay..this post is NOT about my lack of talent in painting..I am actually going somewhere with this, I just got slightly side tracked!
This is where the slight DIY comes in, as in I pieced it together which took time and a bit of research. I wasn’t about to pay an arm and leg for 3 large black frames. I just wasn’t. I splurged on my limited edition living room art thats hung in a custom frame that I had made locally, and it’s LARGE..but for 3 I just couldn’t do it. So I went to my ol faithful…IKEA. I kid you not..I should honestly be an ambassador for IKEA..I freaking love that store, their meatballs (don’t get me started on those steamy little round bites of goodness), ice cream, etc.. it’s been a source for SO many of my projects!
Okay so IKEA had this large black RIBBA frame for CAD $24.99. Right in my frame of budget (woah did not plan that pun..but it’s so brilliant it’s staying)! This left me with so much room to pay for custom mats which are NOT cheap. There is no way around paying for them..unless you want to DIY those..and I know of people who have..but for me I hardly cut a straight line on a good day, so I know where my strengths and weaknesses lie…and so I left my custom matting to the professionals because EVERYONE will be able to see these, starting right from our entry. I used Michaels for my custom mats, and honestly their service was amazing! For my first time, I couldn’t believe how quick it took (it was under 2 weeks). I then chose my photos, I edited them myself because I could, and then used Costco as my place to print them. They are the best deal in town for sure!
Now my breeze way is not in anyway as good as the Mcgee & Co picture, but I honestly am beyond thrilled with how it turned out! I have this area of my house that has a large wall space, it is apart of my most open, exposed portion of the home. When you walk through our front door you see it..and I knew it had to be amazing and make an impact. And I feel it does just that! It has the simple elements that are what I look for, and what please me most with design, and yet still make such an impression. A major win that only took me over a year to execute..yah it’s that bad guys! Next project that’s up.. is hanging pictures in our room. Expect that to take another 6 months..
